1950’s Themed Market, Heritage Lottery Project Launch and Us @sneintonmarket Tomorrow from 10am!!

Ahh back to where it all started!

Down Hockley The Way To Sneinton Maket!

1950's Themed Market and Heritage Project Launch

Two and a bit years ago after leaving my job with no plan B after a chance e-mail from Wendy (who manages the market) looking for a caterer to provide food on the market, I thought ‘I like food, in a previous life I had been a chef so why not?!’ Fast forward through the tears, tantrums, sleepless nights and heartache (it has also been immensely rewarding and I wouldn’t go back to an office job now if I was offered a million pounds!) We are so pleased to hear that Sneinton Community Traders have been awarded a lottery grant to archive the rich history of the market, going back to 1860 didn’t you know?! As all good news should be celebrated with a party (at the very least a cuppa tea!) There is going to be an awesome 1950’s themed market tomorrow from 10am. Fings Ain’t Wot They Used T’Be ( a song from the 50’s and a phrase heard so often down the market, they couldn’t call it anything else!)

We will be there selling Nottingham’s traditional favourite staple mushy peas and mint sauce, plus 50’s recipe inspired cakes and traditional lemonade. An unconventional mix I agree, but we’re not ones for conforming! Plus there will be a fine selection of vintage clothes, accessories and jewellery to peruse, delicious authentic wood-fired pizza from The Awesome Rustic Crust, Lindyhop Dance Workshops, Hula Hoops! Traditional street games, a 50’s style canteen, get creative with  workshops in haberdashery/needlework led by Joy Killowe, and a chance to learn about the project and find out how you can get involved.

The market opens at 10am, the official launch at 11.30 presided over by Margaret, one of Sneinton Market’s longest standing traders who will regale us with her tales and workshops will be running throughout the day.

See you there!

#NCFringe and Pop-Up Cafe @CityArtsNotts 27th-29th March!

We are very excited about running a pop-up cafe for the next Nottingham Creative Fringe which will be held on the weekend of the 27th- 29th March 2015. This will be a multi-venue arts festival based on the edge of the city centre where Sneinton and Hockley meet, running in partnership with the Nottingham chapter of the BBC Get Creative campaign.

The Fringe was founded by two social entrepreneurs, Kirsty Fox and Laura Marano. Kirsty is a creative producer with Bees Make Honey Creative CIC, who offer integrated support and opportunities to those entering and working in the creative industries. Laura is the founder of Green Safari and Tibeb Artisan’s Co (formerly Merkato), linking local designers with ethical and environmentally positive projects in Ethiopia and Kenya. This year they’re working with the likes of City Arts, Sneinton Community Traders, JT Soar and Surface Gallery to put together a programme of events. The festival aims to bring different art forms to new audiences, engage with the local community, promote knowledge of existing arts spaces in the area, and provide opportunities for emerging artists and creative businesses.

This year sees the return of the popular Arts Fair on Sneinton Marketplace running on Saturday 28th (2pm – 6pm) and Sunday 29th (12noon – 5pm). The fair offers an alternative weekend shopping experience, with stalls from local designer-makers, fine artists, fashion, print, books and music, as well as fresh coffee and local produce. The fair will be complimented by live music from local artists and DJs.

The festival base will be at City Arts, 11-13 Hockley. Over the duration of the weekend there will be a festival café with Beccy’s Global Kitchen, a real ale bar with Black Iris Brewery, a series of creative workshops, a panel discussion on Reclaiming Nottingham for arts activity and a ‘gigzabition’ – an exhibition and gig to launch collaborative project The Dust on the Moth. We’re also hosting the free Small Galleries Tour, running from 3pm Saturday and Sunday, audiences can join to tour the exhibitions and find out about studio space in the local area.

Look out for our comprehensive festival programme or visit for more details on events, times and locations!

Beccy’s Global Kitchen @CityArtsNotts and @SneintonMarket #lightnightnotts 6th Feb 17.00-22.00

City Arts is based 11-13 Hockley, near Desi Downtown and the Ice Stadiums MAP
Sneinton Market is just a little further down the road

Light Night is upon us! There are a whole host of awesome things happening all over the city but in our humble opinion City Arts and Sneinton Market are where it’s at!

Down Sneinton Market there will be a FREE Roller Disco (yes free!) A giant LED octopus, animated portrait projections, live music and performances, tasty burgers crafted from locally sourced produce, that Nottingham perennial mushy peas, pulled pork and warm-you-up, hug-in-your-tum veggie delights (courtesy of us!) Mulled apple juice, the Sneinton and St Anns Lantern Parade. Plus a bustling night market selling crafts, jewellery, street wear, crafts and accessories.

If you are feeling chilly after feasting your senses on those delights then take a stroll up the road and find sanctuary in City Arts, grab a coffee or some food and listen to sea shanties sang live for your listening pleasure and take in work by Artist Graham who has created a series of silhouette animations will be shown in a number of Hockley shop fronts, including City Arts, leading you through Hockley and down to Sneinton Market. The short looping animations tell stories influenced by the areas history, from the ancient and long forgotten Sneinton Maze, to more up to date representations of the people, place and area.

If that isn’t enough there will be a second opportunity to view the Young Producer’s installation when City Arts opens for Light Night. The exhibition features a new art installation devised and created by the young artists that make up City Arts’ Young Producers, in collaboration with participants of City Arts’ Express Yourself programme. Young people teamed up with local graffiti artist Nathan Bainbridge to produce the piece. The installation is a stylised and imaginative model of a modern city-scape, inspired by the architecture of Nottingham’s Creative Quarter.
